SUGAR-FREE KUIH BAKAR PANDAN: An Easy Air Fryer Recipe

Soft, fragrant, creamy, and wonderfully pandan-y—this sugar-free Kuih Bakar Pandan is a simple twist on a beloved Malaysian classic. Made with OmniBona and cooked in the air fryer, it’s an easy homemade kuih that’s perfect for tea time, gatherings, or whenever a pandan craving strikes!

There are some flavours that just taste like home, and pandan and coconut are definitely high on that list.

If you grew up enjoying Malaysian kuih, chances are you’ve come across Kuih Bakar—that wonderfully fragrant, soft kuih with its creamy texture, golden top, and little sesame seeds sprinkled over it.

Today, we’re giving this traditional favourite a little twist.

This Sugar-Free Kuih Bakar Pandan uses OmniBona instead of regular sugar, while keeping all the things we love about kuih bakar: the fragrant pandan, creamy coconut milk, soft texture, and that irresistible toasted sesame topping.

And the best part?

You can make it in an air fryer. 🙌

No need to heat up the whole kitchen with a big oven. Just blend, pour, sprinkle, and air fry. It really is that easy!

Why You’ll Love This Sugar-Free Kuih Bakar Pandan

There’s plenty to love about this easy kuih recipe:

  • Sugar-free – made with OmniBona instead of regular sugar

  • Easy to prepare – most of the ingredients go straight into the blender

  • Air fryer friendly – no conventional oven required

  • Full of pandan flavour – thanks to fresh pandan leaves

  • Creamy and fragrant – coconut milk and pandan make a perfect pairing

  • Perfect for tea time – a lovely homemade treat to enjoy with your favourite drink

Basically, it’s a traditional kuih with a little modern-day convenience.

Ingredients

Here’s everything you’ll need to make this easy Kuih Bakar Pandan:

  • 4 tablespoons OmniBona

  • 3 size A eggs

  • 1 box Kara coconut milk

  • ½ cup self-raising flour

  • 3 pandan leaves

  • ¼ cup water

  • A little green food colouring

  • White sesame seeds, for topping

  • Olive oil, for greasing the mould

Nothing too complicated here. In fact, you may already have most of these ingredients sitting in your kitchen.

How to Make Sugar-Free Kuih Bakar Pandan

Step 1: Make the Fresh Pandan Juice

First, let’s get that beautiful pandan flavour going.

Cut the pandan leaves into smaller pieces and blend them together with ¼ cup of water.

Once blended, strain the mixture to remove the pandan fibres.

You should end up with a fragrant green pandan juice. And if your kitchen already smells amazing at this point… just wait. 😋

Step 2: Blend the Kuih Batter

Pour the freshly made pandan juice into a blender.

Add the OmniBona, eggs, Kara coconut milk, and self-raising flour.

Add a little green food colouring if you want a more vibrant pandan-green colour.

Step 3: Blend Until Smooth

Blend everything together until you have a smooth, well-combined batter.

No need to spend ages mixing by hand—this recipe is definitely embracing the “let the blender do the work” philosophy.

Step 4: Prepare the Mould

Lightly grease your baking mould with olive oil.

Pour the pandan batter into the prepared mould.

Then sprinkle white sesame seeds over the top.

The sesame seeds may be a small detail, but they give the finished kuih that classic Kuih Bakar look—and a lovely little contrast in texture.

Step 5: Air Fry

Place the mould into your air fryer and bake at 180°C for approximately 25 minutes.

The top should look nicely set and lightly golden when it’s ready.

Cooking times can vary slightly depending on your air fryer and the size of your mould, so keep an eye on it towards the end of cooking.

Step 6: Cool, Slice & Enjoy!

Once cooked, remove the kuih from the air fryer and allow it to cool slightly before slicing.

Then comes the best part:

Slice it, serve it, and enjoy! 💚

The combination of pandan and coconut is wonderfully comforting, while the sesame seeds add that familiar finishing touch.

What to Serve With Kuih Bakar Pandan

This kuih is lovely on its own, but it’s even better with a hot drink.

Try serving it with:

  • A cup of hot tea

  • Malaysian-style coffee

  • Teh O

  • Your favourite herbal tea

It also makes a lovely addition to an afternoon tea spread or a family gathering.

💡 Tips for Making the Best Kuih Bakar Pandan

Use fresh pandan leaves.
Fresh pandan gives the kuih a much more fragrant and natural aroma.

Don’t skip the straining step.
Straining the blended pandan leaves gives you a smoother pandan juice and helps remove the fibrous bits.

Let the kuih cool before slicing.
It can be tempting to cut into it immediately, but giving it a little time to cool allows the texture to settle and makes slicing easier.

Keep an eye on the air fryer.
Different air fryers can cook slightly differently, so the 25-minute cooking time is a good guide rather than an absolute rule.

A Modern Twist on a Malaysian Favourite

What I love most about this recipe is that it doesn’t try to reinvent Kuih Bakar completely.

It keeps the familiar combination of pandan, coconut, and sesame, but makes the preparation wonderfully simple with a blender and an air fryer.

Sometimes, the best recipes are the ones that don’t require too much fuss.

Just a few ingredients, a little pandan magic, and before you know it, you have a tray of homemade kuih ready to enjoy.

So, if you’ve been looking for an easy sugar-free Kuih Bakar Pandan recipe, this one is definitely worth trying.

Now, excuse me while I go cut myself just one more slice. 😉
