There’s something wonderfully satisfying about making your own jam at home. Maybe it’s the gorgeous colour, the smell of berries simmering away, or simply the feeling of turning a handful of fresh ingredients into something delicious.
And the best part? You don’t need a mountain of sugar to make a delicious blueberry spread.
This simple sugar-free blueberry jam — or blueberry compote, depending on how thick you like it — uses just three ingredients. It’s naturally fruity, lightly sweet, and incredibly easy to make. No complicated techniques, no long list of ingredients, and definitely no need to spend the whole afternoon in the kitchen.
What You’ll Need
- 250 g blueberries — that's two 125 g packs
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Omnibona Sugar-free Original Sweetness Syrup
That’s it. Three ingredients and you’re ready to go!
How to Make It
1. Add the blueberries
Place all the blueberries into a saucepan.
There’s no need to mash them beforehand. As they heat up, the berries will naturally soften and release their beautiful juices.
2. Add the water
Pour 1 cup of water into the saucepan with the blueberries.
Give everything a gentle stir to combine.
3. Add the sweetness
Add 1 tablespoon of Omnibona Sugar-free Original Sweetness Syrup to the blueberry mixture.
Stir well so the syrup is evenly distributed throughout the berries.
4. Let the magic happen
Place the saucepan over the heat and allow the mixture to simmer gently, stirring regularly.
As the blueberries cook, they’ll soften, break down and release their natural juices. Keep stirring from time to time to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Continue cooking until the mixture thickens to your preferred consistency.
If you prefer a smoother, more jam-like texture, you can gently crush some of the blueberries as they soften. If you like your compote a little more rustic, leave some berries whole for those lovely little bursts of blueberry goodness.
Jam or Compote?
The beauty of this recipe is that you can decide!
Cook it a little longer for a thicker, spreadable consistency that's perfect for toast, pancakes or a slice of warm bread.
Prefer something a little looser and fruitier? Take it off the heat while it still has a spoonable consistency and you've got yourself a delicious blueberry compote.
How to Enjoy It
Once cooled slightly, this blueberry creation can be used in all sorts of ways.
Try it:
- Spread over toast or crackers
- Spoon over pancakes or waffles
- Swirled into yoghurt
- Served alongside your favourite breakfast
- Drizzled over desserts
- Or, honestly, eaten straight from the spoon — no judgement here!
