There are few things more comforting than a good cup of teh tarik. That familiar aroma of brewed tea, the creaminess of fresh milk, and, of course, the fun little ritual of “pulling” the tea between two cups to create that smooth, frothy finish.
But what if you want your teh tarik without the added sugar? Good news is, you absolutely can!
With just a few simple ingredients and OmniBona Sugar-Free, Zero Calorie Syrup – Original Sweetness, you can enjoy a deliciously creamy cup of teh tarik while skipping the sugar. It is easy to make, easy to adjust to your preferred sweetness, and still has that unmistakable teh tarik experience.
So, put the kettle aside for a moment and let’s make a cup.
What You’ll Need
For approximately one cup of sugar-free teh tarik, you’ll need:
-
1 cup of water (approximately 236–240 ml)
-
2 g of tea or 1 tea bag
-
2 tablespoons of fresh milk or low-fat fresh milk
-
1–2 tablespoons of OmniBona Sugar-Free, Zero Calorie Syrup – Original Sweetness

How to Make Sugar-Free Teh Tarik
1. Bring the water to a boil
Pour approximately 236–240 ml of water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
This amount is for one cup of teh tarik. If you’re making a few cups for the family, simply increase the ingredients proportionally.
Because let’s be honest — one cup of teh tarik is sometimes never enough.
2. Brew the tea
Once the water is boiling, add approximately 2 g of tea or one tea bag into the saucepan.
Let the tea brew until the water develops a nice tea colour.
How strong should it be?
That’s entirely up to you.
If you like your teh tarik bold and robust, let the tea brew until it reaches a deeper colour. If you prefer something lighter and smoother, you can stop a little earlier.
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to teh tarik. We all have our own favourite kaw level!
3. Add the milk
Next, add 2 tablespoons of fresh milk or low-fat fresh milk into the brewed tea.
Stir gently and let the milk blend into the tea.
You’ll start to get that familiar creamy colour — and at this point, your kitchen should already be smelling pretty good.
4. Add your preferred sweetness
Now comes the fun part.
Add 1–2 tablespoons of OmniBona Sugar-Free, Zero Calorie Syrup – Original Sweetness.
If you prefer a more subtle sweetness, start with one tablespoon. Want it sweeter? Add another tablespoon.
The sweetness is completely adjustable, so you can make your cup exactly the way you like it.
And yes, this is your official permission to say, “Kurang manis, please.”
5. Stir it all together
Give everything a good stir until the syrup is fully mixed into the tea.
At this stage, you already have a creamy, sweetened tea — but we haven’t reached the tarik part yet.
And what’s teh tarik without the tarik?
6. Tarik the tea
Turn off the heat.
Carefully pour the tea between two suitable containers, moving the tea back and forth to create that characteristic frothy texture.
This is where the humble cup of tea becomes teh tarik.
The pulling action helps mix the ingredients while creating that familiar foam on top. You don’t need to channel your inner mamak-teh-tarik champion either. Start with a shorter distance between the containers and work your way up as you get more comfortable.
Just remember: hot tea + ambitious pulling = please be careful!
Once you have a nice layer of froth, pour your teh tarik into your favourite cup.
And there you have it.
One cup of homemade sugar-free teh tarik, ready to enjoy.
Tips for Making the Perfect Sugar-Free Teh Tarik
Want to make your homemade teh tarik even better? Here are a few simple things to keep in mind:
Adjust the tea strength to your liking.
Some people like their teh tarik kaw kaw, while others prefer it lighter. Brew the tea according to your personal preference.
Start with less syrup.
You can always add more sweetness, but you can’t exactly take it back out. Start with one tablespoon of OmniBona syrup and adjust from there.
Use fresh milk for a creamy taste.
Fresh milk gives the drink its familiar milky character. You can also use low-fat fresh milk depending on your preference.
Don’t skip the tarik.
Technically, you could just stir everything together and drink it. But where’s the fun in that? The pulling is part of what makes teh tarik, well… teh tarik!
